Dental Implants Brisbane CBD

Having a missing or severely damaged tooth can be uncomfortable, both for aesthetic and practical reasons. Modern dental implants are a natural-looking and functional solution. If you’re suffering or feeling self-conscious because of a missing tooth, don’t hesitate to reach out to us for an honest consultation.

What Is A Dental Implant?

A dental or tooth implant is an artificial root commonly made of titanium. The artificial root is inserted into the gum and jawbone to replace one or more missing teeth. This then forms the foundation for a dental crown, bridge or denture.

The most advanced solution for replacing teeth, dental implants come with many benefits, including:

  • Similar functionality as a natural tooth
  • Looks realistic
  • Easy to maintain
  • Long-lasting
  • Your other (healthy) teeth don’t need to be touched

Not all patients are suitable for dental implants and each patient and situation needs to be individually assessed. We will assess:

  • Your medical history, including medications that you are taking
  • That you have enough bone to hold the implant
  • That you have healthy teeth and gums
  • How the teeth bite together

All surgical procedures carry risk. It is important to discuss the risks with your dentist, seek clarification and arrange a second opinion if required.

What is the process for a dental implant?

Dental implants are not a quick fix. The process requires rigorous planning and time for healing. Here at Dentistry On George we believe in taking time to get things right the first time. As we are all different, this following is a rough guide, but may not be the same for everyone:

Comprehensive Examination & Treatment Planning

This is the first step for all our implant patients. The dentist will take a thorough medical and dental history, assess your teeth, gums, jaw joints and how the teeth bite together. They will take x-rays and photographs and may refer for more detailed radiographs.

The dentist will go through your treatment plan and the associated costs, risks, benefits and time-frames.

See our New Patient page for further information.

Removal Of Tooth

If the tooth is still to be removed, this will be arranged, along with any associated bone grafting as required. The area will be left for 3 – 5 months to heal. You may be provided with a temporary tooth option during this time. Further radiographic imaging and planning for the implant placement will occur after the healing period.

Implant Placement
If a tooth has already been removed and you are looking to fill a gap, or you have had a tooth removed and it has healed, the next step is to place the implant. This is left for 3 months, during which the implant will integrate with the bone. Again, you may have a temporary tooth option during this time.

Implant Restoration
After 3 months, the dental implant is checked to ensure it has integrated with the bone. If so, digital scans are taken to make your dental crown or bridge. After 2 weeks, your new tooth is screwed into place.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it painful to get a dental implant?

When the titanium implant is put in, you’ll be under local anaesthesia and won’t feel any pain. Most people feel very little discomfort throughout the procedure. Speak to our team if you have a fear of the dentist or feel worried about anything.

We also have options to arrange the placement of the implant under sedation in suitable cases.

How much do dental implants cost?

Because of the surgical and technical extent of the treatment, dental implants do come at a cost. At Dentistry on George, our prices reflect the Australian Dental Association’s average fee guide. We’ll give you a full quote on all treatment involved in getting an implant before starting out.

How long do dental implants last?

Dental implants are designed to be a long-term solution.  The titanium root can last a lifetime in many cases, but the crown over it might need to be changed now and then. Dental crowns typically last around 15 years, and with proper maintenance, even more.

Are you put to sleep for dental implants?

You can be if you chose to be. We can also use medication to help relax you. Speak to your dentist for further information.

Who are dental implants for?

Dental implants are a great solution to missing or severely decayed teeth, bringing relief to many people. However, it’s an invasive surgical treatment, so it’s not right for everyone.

Your medical history will be taken into account, along with the health of the rest of your mouth, especially your gums. There also needs to be sufficient bone to support the implant.

While dental implants last longer than dentures, they’re also more costly.  The process also takes a bit longer due to the gums and bone needing sufficient time to heal. The right solution for you will depend on your needs, budget and goals.

At Dentistry on George, we put our patients’ health first. We take pride in offering honest advice, never recommending treatment that isn’t medically necessary. Book in for a consultation with our experienced dentist if you’d like to find out more about dental implants and whether they suit you.
